REEF INVESTIGATION
We hear in the news that the reefs are endangered.  Did you ever wonder why?  Today you'll investigate different reefs around the world and the threats they face.
Your task will be to create a poster representing one of the reefs below.  On your poster you should include:

1. Where the reef is located specifically.  For example, Is it on the Pacific or Atlantic side of the country etc.  Latitude.
2. How the reef formed geologically or describe its structure.  Determine if it is a patch, fringing, barrier, or atoll reef.
3. List the weather/climate conditions and water conditions.  If you can find, ave. temperature of the air/water, day length, average cloud cover, rainfall, pH, water clarity, salinity, etc.
4. Describe the biodiversity or changes to biodiversity.  If you can, see if you can find any statistics.
5. Explain the threats facing your reef.
6. Then, try to make your reef look like an actual reef in that location.  You can draw the reef or print off and attach pictures.

To print your pictures in color save them all to a power point (you can put a couple pictures on a slide) and save it.  Then you can print the power point slides from the colored printers in the library or I can print them for you tomorrow. You can also get ideas from the books that are in the classroom, but you cannot cut out pictures from the books ;)  You will need to find organisms to represent each of the criteria below (some organisms fit multiple criteria):

1. infauna and meiofauna that burrow and help oxygenate the sand.

2. phyto and zooplankton, as well as holoplankton and meroplankton.
4. In addition to plankton, you need a neritic organism, and benthic organism.
3. Filter, suspension, and deposit feeder.
4. A representative of each trophic level of the food chain: producer, herbivore, carnivore, top predator, detritus eaters, and decomposer.
5. An example of warning coloration, cryptic coloration, bioluminescence, and counter shading.
6. An example of a defense mechanism other than camouflage.
7.  An invertebrate, 3 types of fish, large animal or mammal living in this reef (other than fish).
